Amazing to see how many young teens are taking the stage and talking to a gathering of adults at conferences. I’ve seen a couple of them and what might have seemed like an age where we used to be shy and insecure for the previous generation seems like the age of empowerment and proactiveness.

In this talk Tavi Gevinson, founder and blogger of the style blog thestylerookie.com talks to an audience about how she feels is the right way brands should connect with Generation Y and how age old passive marketing strategies will never work with her generation. “One thing that we teens are told but we maybe don’t follow for a while is like ‘Be Yourself’, by like teachers, like magazines, tv shows and everything all tell us that… but at some point we are try to be like with the in-crowd, or in with the out-crowd or really trendy or really like a non-conformist, like Nirvana! So… I feel like it’s a lot like the same way with trends, or with brands because now being trendy doesn’t really work because they all end too soon. “
